Social networking is changing the way we interact with our friends and family like never before. Now with the creation of social network sites gone are the days where you lose touch with someone for years. This phenomenon is giving people all over the world the chance to reconnect whenever and wherever they are. With it looking like social networking sites are not going away anytime soon, there are tremendous possibilities and opportunities to be had if you capitalise on this worldwide trend.
Here are a few statistics to back up the significance of an online presence in social networking. In total 30 billion pieces of content (e.g., links, photos, notes) are shared on Facebook each month and 25 billion tweets were sent on Twitter in 2010 (Source: Royal Pingdom found at: http://tinyurl.com/5s8nfrm).
The early days of social networking resonated from sites such as Myspace and Bebo. Myspace in particular was used enormously in the music industry where struggling artists and bands would upload their songs to their own Myspace page for a potential audience of millions to hear. This gave rise to current popstars such as Lily Allen who rose to fame after posting demos of her music in November 2005 on Myspace. However as times change new and enhanced social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter have overtaken the previous Bebo and Myspace sites in popularity, size and business potential.
